Biomechanics of Aqueous Humor Outflow Resistance*
نویسنده
چکیده
Conventional aqueous outflow pathway – Comprised of the trabecular meshwork, the juxtacanalicular connective tissue, the endothelial lining of Schlemm’s canal, Schlemm’s canal itself, the collecting channels, and aqueous veins. Flow resistance – The flow resistance (R=DP/Q) of a tissue is the ratio between the pressure drop across that tissue (DP) and the flow rate generated by that pressure drop (Q). Giant vacuoles – The outpouchings of the inner-wall endothelium of Schlemm’s canal into its lumen. They are caused by the pressure drop across inner-wall endothelial cells. Hydraulic conductivity (Lp) – A measure of the ease with which a fluid passes through a tissue: Lp=Q/A/DP where A is the cross-sectional area of the tissue facing flow. Inner-wall region – Comprised of the inner-wall endothelium of Schlemm’s canal, its basement membrane, and the adjacent juxtacanalicular tissue. Laser trabeculoplasty – The surgical treatment of glaucoma, in which a laser beam is focused on the trabecular meshwork making tiny, evenly spaced burns.

Biomechanics of Schlemm's canal endothelium and intraocular pressure reduction.
Ocular hypertension in glaucoma develops due to age-related cellular dysfunction in the conventional outflow tract, resulting in increased resistance to aqueous humor outflow. Two cell types, trabecular meshwork (TM) and Schlemm's canal (SC) endothelia, interact in the juxtacanalicular tissue (JCT) region of the conventional outflow tract to regulate outflow resistance. Unlike endothelial cells...
متن کاملThe flow of aqueous humor through micro-porous filters.
Flow resistance was measured as bovine and primate aqueous humor was passed through Nuclepore polycarbonate filters having flow dimensions similar to those found within the juxtacanalicular meshwork of the aqueous outflow network. The results indicate that aqueous humor has a greater flow resistance than isotonic saline; this greater resistance is attributable to proteins or glycoproteins in aq...
متن کاملAqueous Humor Dynamics: A Review
Glaucoma is a family of optic neuropathies which cause irreversible but potentially preventable vision loss. Vision loss in most forms of glaucoma is related to elevated IOP with subsequent injury to the optic nerve. Secretion of aqueous humor and regulation of its outflow are physiologically important processes for maintaining IOP in the normal range. Thus, understanding the complex mechanisms...
متن کاملEffect of oculomotor nerve stimulation on outflow facility and pupil diameter in a monkey (Cercopithecus ethiops).
Aqueous humor outflow resistance was studied in monkeys (Cercopithecus ethiops) with intact oculomotor nerves, after the nerve had been severed on one side, and during electrical stimulation of the severed nerve. Pupil diameters (on both eyes) and outflow resistance on the non-stimulated side acted as controls. It was found that the outflow resistance increased and the pupil dilated when the ne...
متن کاملCollagen: A potential factor involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma
Numerous studies have been completed on glaucoma pathogenesis. However, the potential and controversial interaction between ocular biomechanical properties and the glaucomatous diseases process has received much more attention recently. Previous studies have found that collagen tissues gain mutation change in glaucoma patients. This study was conducted to determine the role of collagen in the b...
